Image by cpmanda via Flickr Roses are the quintessential wedding flowers. When thinking romance and love, roses will be the flower envisaged by most of us. While not strictly fall wedding flowers, roses are so loved that they are available from florists and wholesalers all year round. Indeed some varieties are naturally available in fall.
Roses are a versatile choice for your fall wedding flowers. They lend themselves to many types of arrangements - long stemmed and formal, or loose ethereal blooms and everything in between. Nothing says romance and love like roses. Don’t think that by selecting roses you are being cliched though. Their versatility means they can be used in a variety of unique ways that will say exactly what you want for your wedding day. Many roses, particularly older style ones, also offer the added dimension of scent to your bouquets and arrangements.
Rather than look at a particular type of rose, it is more practical to focus on the look and color that you want. Unless a variety is special to you for sentimental reasons, for example one your mother or grandmother carried, you can rest assured that there will be a color and form to achieve the look you’re after. Many rose colors also have traditional meanings attached to them, for example purity for white roses and joy for yellow roses.
Consider adding some contrast to your wedding flowers bouquets and arrangements by adding other flowers. Contrasts in either color or form are generally the most pleasing to the eye. However, if you are after something particularly bold contrasting both can make a big statement. Baby’s breath and greenery offers a very traditional look. Calla lilies provide a great contrast in form. When using a very different color or form, accents will usually give you the best result. For example a few deep red roses dotted amongst all white is quite dramatic. When using complementary colors it is possible to achieve an excellent result with more of a mix. A beautiful bouquet of pastel colored roses is a timeless favorite. Adding different flowers such as lisianthus or iris in similar colors also works well.
Roses can be formed into virtually any shaped bouquet from tight and round to cascades to single stems. The stems may be left long and tied with ribbon or cut short.
The versatility of roses for your fall wedding flowers doesn’t stop with the wedding party. Rose petals scattered on reception tables are an alternative to large centerpieces. Alternatively, long stemmed roses in tall vases offer a more dramatic table centerpiece. Or you might prefer a group of smaller bouquets low down on your table for a softer look. Roses and single petals add a romantic touch to your wedding cake. Even your desserts can be decorated with rose petals to complete the theme.
What ever the look you’re seeking for your day, roses are certainly worth considering for your fall wedding flowers.
